Osteoporosis, or its precursor, osteopenia is a major health concern for women and men over 50, causing more than 700,000 spinal fractures and more than 300,000 hip fractures each year in the United States.
What can we do about it?
Start practicing yoga for healthy bones! Yoga poses that are weight bearing and challenge opposing muscles help stimulate osteocytes, the bone making cells. Yoga is excellent for improving posture which greatly reduces spinal fractures. A consistent yoga practice also increases range of motion, muscle strength, coordination, balance, and decreases anxiety, all of which greatly reduce the risk of falling.
In this Wisdom Gathering, we will discuss spinal compression and how to counteract the effects of aging, understand the importance of spinal extension versus spinal flexion, and learn practical daily habits to elongate the spine and improve posture.
